Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) maintains and operates the Angus L. Macdonald and A. Murray MacKay Bridges that span Halifax harbour. Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, the Painter (Maintenance Department) is responsible for cleaning and removing failed painting coatings, preparing steel surfaces for painting, and applying paint coating to all parts of the bridge structures.

 

This position is deemed as a *Safety Sensitive Position as work is completed in variable weather temperatures and adverse weather conditions, working at extreme heights from 170 – 320 feet above the bridge, and in confined spaces below the bridge or in the bridge towers. A critical accountability for this role is following HHB Safety standards, policies and processes, including but not limited to: completing job hazard assessments, wearing required Personal Protective Equipment, ensuring proper access of confined spaces, reporting safety observations, and being able to rescue co-workers as necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Follow HHB safety policies, procedures, Safe Work Practices, and Safety reporting standards.
  • Follow HHB's quality control and productivity standards for the Maintenance Painting Program.
  • Set up and tear down of workstations, submit job hazard assessments and safety reports, clean and inspect painting tools and equipment, and secure tools and equipment in storage.
  • Complete job-related safety training and skills development as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Experience using pneumatic hand tools.
  • Able to work in a *Safety Sensitive Position, in adverse weather conditions, at extreme heights (170 - 320 feet), in direct traffic, in confined spaces, and actively participate in high angle rescue. Must pass a drug and alcohol test, a physical demands test, a lead level test, as well as a criminal background check and employment reference checks as conditions of employment.
  • A Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
  • Able to work in an efficient and safe manner while exhibiting pride in quality work.
  • Punctual and dependable with a can-do attitude.

 

Assets Include

  • Experience in a unionized environment.
  • Experience with lead abatement.
  • Valid Safety training in Fall Protection, Confined Space Entry, WHMIS, First Aid, High Angle Rescue. If necessary, these courses will be scheduled by the employer for the successful candidate to complete.

 

This is a full-time, permanent seasonal position, working 40 hours per week from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday throughout HHB's summer season (May – October). Overtime will be required based on operational demands, including on weekends. The hourly wage for this position is $20.38 during the probationary period as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
