The Board of Directors of the Pender Islands Fire Protection Society is accepting applications for the position of


FIRE CHIEF, Permanent, Full Time

Based in the beautiful Southern Gulf Islands of British Columbia and boasting an outstanding temperate climate, surrounded by some of the best boating on the Canadian West Coast, the Pender Islands’ unique charm, stunning scenery, and rural/small town charm atmosphere may be just for you. The community (pop. 2700 full-time; tripling in summer) boasts great schools, parks, health care services, highly respected Emergency Responders and is located one ferry ride away from major city centres and airports.

Leading, directing and inspiring our composite fire department, the successful candidate will have a passion for delivering quality, safe emergency response services and possess proven, extensive and undeniable experience in: 

  1. The organization, direction and management of full service Fire Protection and Rescue Services, including modern techniques for managing organizational performance, human resources, recruiting, strategic planning, finance and administration;
  2. Engaging, motivating and mentoring staff and volunteers to care and excel in service delivery;
  3. Developing creative and effective methods to enhance community and responder safety through professional delivery of fire prevention, fire suppression and emergency response service and programs.

Qualifications include: 

  • Business/Management/Fire Services Administration Diploma (or higher) from a recognized institution, with an equivalent combination of progressive training and experience, including minimum 5 years in a senior officer position; or an equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered;
  • Fire Officer Level IV, or equivalent training and experience including Incident Safety Officer required;
  • A successful Police Information check, including a Vulnerable Sector Check;
  • A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license with an air brakes endorsement;
  • First Responder Level 3 First Aid with endorsements.

The successful candidate must be willingness to reside on the Pender Islands; share on-call duty responsibilities after regular work hours; promote good-will in all public settings; and adhere to meeting the PIFRS ‘Code of Conduct’ while on and off duty.
