Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) is a self-supporting entity that maintains and operates the Angus L. Macdonald and A. Murray MacKay Bridges that span Halifax harbour. Reporting directly to the General Manager & Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Health & Safety Manager – Term position is a key member of the Management Team responsible for: the development and implementation of Health, Safety and Environmental policies, procedures and programs throughout HHB, and the promotion and championing of HHB’s goal to have a world-class safety program. The Health & Safety Manager is responsible for ensuring workplace hazards are eliminated and HHB operates in compliance with all safety and environmental regulations, standards and codes.
As a member of the Management Team, this role is held accountable for developing and achieving HHB strategic goals with a primary focus on those relating to safety, efficiency, environmental stewardship, customer value, financial sustainability, supporting a culture and practice of innovation, within a workplace where employees thrive.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
¨ Act as a safety advocate by demonstrating excellent safety behaviours, following regulatory practices and rules, recognizing and promoting hazard reporting and ensuring effective safety reporting.
¨ Develop and implement safety policies, procedures and programs that pre-emptively eliminate hazardous conditions.
¨ Adhere to the safety audit schedule, conduct and/or assist with audits and follow ups on corrective actions.
¨ Analyze technical data for trends related to hazards, events and occurrences.
¨ Deliver safety information, and act as an advisor and resource to HHB, contractors, stakeholders, the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee and assist with incident investigations as part of the investigation team.
¨ Support the development and delivery of a wide range of specialized training and educational programs for HHB employees on safe work practices, WHMIS, first aid, fire procedures and other safety related topics.
¨ Participate in emergency preparedness and contingency planning activities.
Maintain a high visibility and close contact with employees to consistently and continually reinforce safety standards.
¨ Health & Safety professional with a minimum of 7 - 10 years of experience, with at least 5 – 7 with accountability for leading or influencing people.
¨ Certified Safety Professional with relevant education in Occupational Health & Safety.
¨ Excellent written and verbal communication skills; clear, thorough and timely communication using appropriate and effective tools and techniques.
¨ Experience developing and implementing safety policies, procedures and programs.
¨ Solid organizational skills including attention to detail and multi-tasking skills.
¨ Works cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problem, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.
¨ Developing and delivering specialized health and safety training to all levels within an organization.
¨ Positively influences others to achieve results that are in the best interest of the organization
¨ Develops and manages continuous improvement opportunities identified through industry specific knowledge of trends, standards, and best practices.
¨ Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, with a high proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint applications.
¨ Skilled in data compilation, tracking, collation, analysis and report development.
Position specific requirements:
¨ Able to work at extreme heights (170 – 320 feet).
¨ Clean driving record and a valid Nova Scotia Class 5 Driver’s licence (a drivers’ abstract will be required).
This is a Six (6) Month Full Time Term position with the possibility of extension, working 8:00a.m. – 4:00p.m. (35 hours a week) Monday to Friday but may occasionally require travel and extended hours (weekend and/or evening).
