Welcome To Ferguson Forest Centre Corporation - Applying For The Lead Hand - Container & Perennial Stock Position

Reporting to the Section Grower – Container & Perennial Stock, the Lead Hand – Container & Perennial Stock takes the lead with the manual worker crew in accomplishing the tasks required to grow and maintain the container and perennial stock. This includes, but is not limited to, seeding, weeding, transplanting, location mapping, inventorying, packing for customer delivery and shipping the stock and, when required, coordinating the manual crew to accomplish these tasks in a timely manner and with the required quality control.

1. Staff Supervision – this position requires periodic hands-on supervision of manual workers
   • Utilizing Work Orders received from the Section Grower – Container & Perennial Stock and/or Director, Nursery Operations, provide direction to manual workers
   • Mentor staff to improve performance
   • Daily review of staff to address and correct performance and quality issues in a timely manner
   • Provide feedback on staff performance to the Section Grower – Container & Perennial Stock
   • Manage staff to ensure a safe work environment; in the event of an injury, report the incident to the Director, Nursery Operations as soon as possible
   • Foster and promote a team atmosphere
   • Follow all appropriate laws, regulations, and nursery policies
2. Nursery Operations – this position reports to and receives direction from the Section Grower – Container & Perennial Stock and uses available resources to ensure the completion of tasks be either undertaking the task personally and/or delegating to available staff. Specifically, tasks will include
   • Seeding of all tree and shrub seedlings in broadcast trays and jiffies for use on the nursery and for sale
   • Seeding and up-potting as required of perennials
   • Caring for all container and perennial stock throughout its lifecycle including fertilizing, irrigation, weeding, pruning, root, pruning, thinning, spraying, sorting and all other activities to ensure a quality product that meets required standards
   • Inventory management - Accurate counting and mapping of all stock including stage of development
   • Assisting Section Grower - Container & Perennial stock with managing greenhouses including managing irrigation system, humidity
   • Packaging of greenhouse products for shipment and delivery
   • Fall packing of stock for cold storage
   • Customer service – ensuring orders are packed accurately with quality product on time for pick-up or delivery
   • Cleaning and proper storage of trays, vehicles, tools and equipment and maintaining a clean and organized work environment that is safe and efficient
3. Assist other areas of the Nursery at the direction of the Director of Nursery Operation or Section Grower - Container & Perennial Stock as directed. This may include, but is not limited to, the following activities:
   • Assisting Section Grower – Potted Stock with tasks such as uncovering and covering hoop houses
   • Assisting Section Grower – Bareroot with spring/fall lift requirements
   • Assisting Seed Technician with seed collection, storage, handling, stratification, cleaning and other seed operation on an as needed
   • Outlet Store - Under the direction of Sales, assist in the set-up, take-down, maintenance of stock, and customer service in the Outlet Store.
