Welcome To City of Richardson - Applying For The Heavy Equipment Operator (Various Divisions) Position


Under general supervision, drive and operate large commercial heavy motorized equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, backhoes w/hydraulic jackhammers, knuckleboom, excavators, graders, loaders, front-loaders, rollers, roll-off trucks, etc. Type of equipment used will vary based on department assignment (construction, streets, refuse collection, water/wastewater utilities. Perform other related work as required.  


Drive and operate large motorized equipment. Type of equipment operated will depend on assignment.

Water Utility Operations: Operate dump truck w/backhoe, backhoe w/hydraulic jackhammer

Construction/Rehab: Excavators, graders, loaders, rollers, dump truck, backhoes w/hydraulic jackhammers and other various heavy equipment

Streets: Backhoe, front-end loaders, excavators, graders, rollers

Refuse Collections: Front-loaders, roll-off trucks, knuckleboom and other equipment for refuse collections

Use good judgment to work safely and use equipment properly. Safely operate, care for, and maintain acceptable appearance of assigned vehicles and equipment, including washing, servicing, and preventive maintenance checks. Depending on assignment, may operate hand tools such as hand saws, skill saws, drill press, vibrator, bolt cutters, picks, axes, air compressors, jackhammers, cutting torches and various weight hammers. May be assigned surface finishing/masonry duties when assigned to streets. Lift and/or carry up to 100 pounds, and pull, push, and/or drag up to 150 pounds of various materials or refuse. Climb, crawl, kneel, squat, stoop, and/or bend freely when participating in refuse collection or other job duties. Sit and/or stand for extended periods especially when assigned to refuse collections. Communicate courteously and effectively with customers, city employees and officials. Hear clearly to work safely when working around equipment and in traffic. Read written instructions effectively. Write reports by hand. Work day and/or evening hours as needed. Work in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings, and/or inclement weather. Some exposure to dust, fumes, and loud noises that are routinely encountered in construction environment or refuse collection operations, using proper safety precautions. Maintain written records on blocked containers and tickets for roll-off billing.


High School Diploma or GED is required. Based on assignment, Texas Commercial Drivers License, Class A or B, is required or must be obtained within 6 months.


Based on assignment: One to two years of experience required in one or more assigned area of Water Utilities, Construction/Rehab, Streets or Refuse Collection. One year of experience driving and operating heavy motorized equipment.
