Welcome To Confederation Freezers - Applying For The Refrigeration Operator Position

The Refrigeration Operator will be responsible for managing and maintaining the Refrigeration Systems across the Hamilton Facility (Ammonia and Rooftop) as well as providing assistance in other areas and equipment as directed.

Position Type: Hourly, Full Time (Weekends and Holidays as Required)

Environment: Cold Storage

Regular Hours: 10 hour Shifts - Subject to Change

Accountabilities and Detailed Activity

Refrigeration Inspections

• Daily checks of refrigeration system

• Check temperatures in freezer and dock

• Check condensers and glycol systems on roof for leaks

• Walk through freezer to check for iced up evaporators defrost when necessary

• Maintain/monitor/test/log all utility readings and deviations from/for all refrigeration equipment, meters, lines, tanks etc. while adhering to Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) standards

Equipment Routine Maintenance

• Routine maintenance of the refrigeration system, as necessary

• Updating maintenance logs for all machinery

• Perform minor repairs on docks and doors forklift maintenance and minor repairs too

• Ensuring basic tools and machinery are in working order by performing regular inspections

Preventative Maintenance

• Conduct preventative maintenance work

• Conduct follow-ups on all maintenance and repair work

Safety Protocol & Compliance

• Conduct safety inspections as scheduled

• Comply with all health and safety regulations and practices on site

• Ensure proper storage of all inventory and equipment

• Maintain a safe and clean work environment by ensuring the facility is operating in accordance with the TSSA

• Ensure all work performed complies with governing practices, codes and regulations, Health and Safety, Food Safety, HACCP, WHIMS, MSDS and Sierra Policy Requirements

Minimum Requirements

Education and/or Professional Designation

• Must have a minimum of operating engineer “Class B” certification or be working towards certificate

• Additional relevant licenses and certificates may be required

• Courses in steam, boiler, refrigeration are an asset as well


• Proven experience as a refrigeration operator or in steam and boiler systems

• Practical knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heating and cooling systems

• Strong knowledge and experience maintaining and trouble-shooting refrigeration equipment (ammonia/Freon)

• Experience working with SOPs/GMPs is considered an asset

Language Skills:

• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally

• Fluent in English

Technical Skills:

• Computer literacy

• Good mathematical skills

• Strong technical knowledge of all building systems (electrical, heating etc.) considered an asset

• Knowledge of health & safety practices and regulations

• Control system experience is a plus

• Ability to Read and Interpret blueprints, drawings and schematics

• Demonstrated mechanical and electrical aptitude
