Job Summary:

As the K-8th Grade Special Education Classroom Teacher at Do & Be Arts Academy of Excellence (DBAE), you will play a pivotal role in shaping our innovative educational model and creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students with diverse learning needs. Your expertise in special education will be instrumental in ensuring that all students, including those with disabilities, receive the support they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. As a founding teacher at DBAE, you will have the unique opportunity to shape the direction of our special education program, contribute to the success of our students, and be a driving force in creating a culture of excellence and inclusivity. Recommended Qualifications:  DBAE is a founding school committed to a strong launch to our programming therefore the following qualifications are highly recommended for serious consideration of this role

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field (Master’s degree preferred)

  • Valid teaching license or certification in Special Education

  • Previous experience working with K-8th grade students with diverse learning needs

  • Minimum of two years special education experience (In-depth knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices. Must have the ability to create and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) tailored to the unique needs of each student)

  • Passion for empowering students to reach their full potential and advocating for inclusive education practices

  • Experience in a startup or charter school environment is a plus

 

Teacher Competencies:

Teaching Expertise: Demonstrates a deep understanding of K-8th grade curriculum, pedagogy, and special education instructional strategies/modifications/accommodations. Utilizes arts-integrated teaching methods to engage students and foster creativity in the classroom.

Classroom Management: Establishes and maintains a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes respect, cooperation, and active student participation. Implements effective restorative behavior management strategies and supports the social-emotional development of students.

Differentiated Instruction: Adapts instructional approaches to meet the diverse learning needs of students, including those with disabilities, English language learners, and historically under-represented groups. Implements strategies to address individual learning styles and challenges.

Collaboration: Works collaboratively with colleagues, administrators, and parents to support student learning and achievement. Participates actively in team meetings, professional development, and school-wide initiatives.

Communication: Demonstrates the ability to engage and inspire through verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with students, parents, and stakeholders of diverse backgrounds and abilities. Provides timely feedback on student progress and maintains open lines of communication.

Flexibility and Adaptability: Embraces change, demonstrates resilience, and adapts teaching strategies to meet evolving needs and challenges. Shows a willingness to take risks and try new approaches in the classroom. Demonstrates the ability to adapt and innovate in a startup environment, and able to balance multiple responsibilities and manage time effectively .

Entrepreneurial Mindset: Ability to embrace challenges, take calculated risks, and drive change in a start-up environment.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, manage a caseload of special education students with  individualized education plans (IEPs)/ 504 Plans. Develop plans for students with disabilities:inclusive, self-contained and pull-out settings

  •  Effectively communicate and collaborate with parents, guardians,general education teachers, and support staff the special education process including process for referrals, evaluations, annual IEPs/504 plans, and re-evaluations as well as parental rights granted by IDEA.

  • Create and maintain Special Education documentation as required by federal, state, and district regulations

  • Provide direct instruction and support to students with diverse learning needs, including accommodations and modifications as needed

  • Provide accommodated testing conditions for classroom and standardized testing; administer academic assessments

  • Assess student progress, track data, and adjust instructional strategies to meet individualized goals and objectives

  • Analyze informal and formal student assessment results and use this information to drive and inform instruction

  • Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure the inclusion of students with disabilities in the arts-integrated curriculum and project-based learning activities

  • Establish a positive and supportive classroom environment that promotes self-confidence, independence, and respect for all students

  • Establish clear expectations and routines to promote a positive space. Utilize restorative justice approaches for classroom behavior management and conflict resolution

  • Engage in ongoing professional development to enhance special education teaching practices and stay current with best practices in the field

  • Value and draw upon students’ experiences and backgrounds

  • Maintain high expectations for students academic achievement and conduct

  • Facilitating IEP meetings using a strengths based and family centered approach

  • Coordinating with student’s special education team to ensure all documents are completed in a timely manner (according to state, local, and school policies and procedures) prior to MDT meeting. 

  • Connect with special education team to ensure all team members (including parents) are prepared for the content of the meeting. 

  • Complete quarterly IEP progress reports and provide quarterly IEP progress reports to parents/guardians.  

  • Maintaining student files (paper and electronic) according to school and state standards.  Providing training and technical assistance to case managers, teachers, related service providers and support service professionals on all aspects of case management: use of computer systems for the special education process,goal writing, progress reports, annual reviews and parent communication.   

  • Collaborate with other teachers to design performances, projects and activities that integrate all the arts.
