Purpose of Job: The Property Maintenance Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality, hands-on instruction to students in the field of property maintenance. This role is vital in preparing students for successful careers in property management and maintenance by equipping them with the technical skills, industry knowledge, and practical experience necessary to excel in the field. The instructor will foster a safe, engaging, and supportive learning environment that promotes both academic and professional growth for students, ensuring they are well-prepared to meet the demands of the industry.

Major Duties, Tasks, and Responsibilities:

Essential Functions of the Job:

  1. Provide excellent customer service to students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders.
  2. Support and promote SouthernTech's quality initiatives, including the Baldrige criteria, Oklahoma Quality Award Foundation criteria, Tech Centers That Work, and Lean Office.
  3. Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures for continuous improvement in customer services.
  4. Support and assist in developing and executing the SouthernTech strategic plan.
  5. Deliver instructional lessons on various property maintenance skills, including but not limited to plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and general repair techniques.
  6. Develop, update, and maintain instructional materials, training aids, and course content.
  7. Assess and evaluate student performance through practical tests, written exams, and regular feedback.
  8. Maintain a safe and organized learning environment, ensuring adherence to all safety protocols and regulations.
  9. Provide hands-on training and demonstrations of property maintenance techniques and equipment.
  10. Collaborate with other instructors and staff to ensure the curriculum aligns with industry standards and job market needs.
  11. Offer mentorship and guidance to students, assisting with career readiness and providing advice on the property maintenance industry.
  12. Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and technological advancements in property maintenance.

 

Other:

  1. Perform other tasks and assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  2. Attend faculty meetings, professional development workshops, and industry-related events.
  3. Maintain accurate records of student progress and attendance.
  4. Participate in curriculum development and revisions as necessary.
  5. Contribute to the recruitment and retention of students through outreach and student engagement activities.
  6. Provide support to students outside of class hours, as needed, for additional guidance and assistance.
  7. Assist with maintaining and preparing training facilities and equipment.

Education, Knowledge, Skill, & Experience Requirements:

  1. Certification or licensure in one or more property maintenance specialties (e.g., HVAC, plumbing, electrical work, etc.) is required (or ability to obtain within 24 months).
  2. Experience in troubleshooting and repairing residential or commercial systems and equipment.
  3. Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations, including adult learners and those with varying skill levels.
  4. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  5. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt teaching methods based on student needs and learning styles.

Education and Experience:

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Construction, Facility Management, or Industrial Technology) preferred.
  2. At least 5 years of professional experience in property maintenance or a related field.
  3. Strong knowledge of property maintenance, including plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC systems, carpentry, and general repairs.
  4. Previous teaching or training experience, preferably in a technical or vocational setting.
  5. Experience using instructional technologies, including virtual platforms, learning management systems, and training software.
  6. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts in an easily understandable manner.
  7. Strong organizational and time-management skills.

 Knowledge and Skills:

  1. Technical Expertise: Extensive knowledge in property maintenance tasks, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and general repairs.
  2. Instructional Skills: Ability to teach complex technical concepts to diverse student groups, using clear explanations, demonstrations, and interactive activities.
  3. Curriculum Development: Experience in developing, adapting, and maintaining educational content and materials, ensuring they reflect industry standards and advancements.
  4. Safety Compliance: In-depth knowledge of safety protocols and regulations related to property maintenance, ensuring a safe learning environment.
  5. Technological Proficiency: Familiarity with digital learning platforms, learning management systems (LMS), and modern instructional technologies.
  6. Assessment and Evaluation: Ability to create and apply various methods of assessment to evaluate student progress, provide constructive feedback, and adjust teaching strategies as needed.
  7. Problem-Solving: Strong ability to troubleshoot issues in real-world property maintenance scenarios and guide students through effective solutions.
  8. Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with students, colleagues, and industry professionals.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  2. Ability to safely operate and demonstrate the use of property maintenance tools and equipment.
  3. Capable of conducting demonstrations and assisting students with hands-on activities in a variety of maintenance environments.
  4. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.

Work Environment:

  1. Work is typically performed in a classroom or workshop setting, with occasional fieldwork or off-site training required.
  2. Exposure to various tools, machinery, and potential hazards (e.g., electrical systems, plumbing equipment, etc.). Safety protocols and equipment must be followed.
  3. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required, depending on course schedule and student needs.
  4. The role may involve some travel to attend industry conferences, professional development opportunities, or to visit off-site training locations.
