Brick and Stone Mason pre-apprenticeship program in Port Hope, Ontario.
Support Ontario Youth has partnered with OPCMIA Local 598 Training Centre in an exciting restoration of a historic music hall and opera house, originally built in 1871. This is an unpaid pre-apprenticeship program which follows the Level 1 curriculum of Brick & Stone Masonry (401A), in the beautiful town of Port Hope. Over the course of 12 weeks, you’ll gain valuable hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge, learning to construct and repair structures using bricks, stone, and other masonry materials. Work alongside skilled journeypersons and be part of preserving an iconic piece of history while honing your craft in this rewarding field. Core Responsibilities:
Construction and Repair: You'll engage with demolition, patching, rebuilding walls, finishing and sealing, repointing mortar, bricks or stones replacements, masonry cleaning, etc.
Material Handling: You'll learn to handle, cut, and place various masonry materials, including bricks, concrete blocks, stone, and structural tiles.
Tool Proficiency: You'll gain expertise in using hand and power tools, including chisels, hammers, grinders and small pointing trowels.
Communication and Collaboration: You'll learn to communicate effectively with supervisors, other tradespeople, and clients to ensure smooth project execution.
Skills Developed:
Technical Skills: You'll develop proficiency in laying bricks, cutting stone, and using various masonry tools and techniques.
Teamwork Skills: You'll learn to work effectively as part of a construction team.
Safety and Equipment Training: You'll develop a strong understanding of safety procedures and regulations to ensure a safe work environment.
Apprenticeship Structure:
On-the-Job Training: You'll work alongside experienced journeypersons, gaining practical experience in various construction projects
Technical Training: You'll attend classroom sessions to learn about masonry techniques, materials, safety procedures, and industry standards.
Upon completion of the program, you will be qualified to join the OPCMIA Local 598 Union and continue your apprenticeship journey as a Brick & Stone Mason (401A)!
Note: Shuttle transportation is available for residents in the North York area to and from the OPCMIA Local 598 training center as well as a shuttle from Whitby GO station.
