JOB SUMMARY 

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Controller is responsible for the oversight of all finance, accounting and reporting activities.  The Controller will lead the day-to-day finance operations and will be responsible for all functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and grants administration.   

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements. 
  • Ensure financial records are accurate, timely, and fully compliant with CRA regulations, non-profit reporting standards, and funder requirements. 
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures. 
  • Coordinate all audit activity. 
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of SOY’s financial status. 
  • Assist SOY’s leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate. 
  • Support the senior leadership in engaging the board’s audit committee around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery. 
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and grants. 
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the leadership team; continuously collaborate with program leadership to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations. 
  • Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

  • CPA designation (or working towards) with a background in accounting, and compliance. 
  • 7 – 10 years of accounting and finance experience.  
  • Past work experience in a Not-For-Profit organization. 
  • Prior experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments  
  • A track record in grants management, as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants, is essential 
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers. 
  • Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software 
  • Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation versus. simple reporting  
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; with experience effectively presenting key financial data to senior management, the Board, and external partners, and the ability to translate complex financial concepts for audiences at all levels, including both finance and non-finance managers.

  • Proactive, hands-on strategic thinking.  
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills. 
  • Attention to detail to support the accuracy of reporting activities. 
  • Proven time management skills, and experience with managing multiple priorities and deadlines 
  • Highly skilled communicator and collaborative team player, with the ability to clearly convey financial information to non-financial stakeholders and work effectively across departments to support organizational goals. 
  • Creative problem-solving skills, and ability to remain calm under pressure. 
  • Experience managing or directing the work of others.  
  • Good presentation skills. 
  • Highly proficient in MS Office with expertise in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint  

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant Ontario legislation and regulations. 

WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • Five-day work week with a regular in-office presence. 
  • Flexibility to work from home as operational demands permit.  
  • Salary Range: $95,000- $98,040
