This Position
Reporting to Director, Marketing & Visitor Experience, the Web developer and Technical support role will use a variety of programming languages to maintain, modify, and develop websites, and help us build cutting-edge, AI-powered websites and intelligent chatbots. They will analyze user needs to implement content, graphics, performance, and website capacity. The role also involves integrating websites with other computer applications, overseeing overall website functionality, evaluating and managing website performance, and facilitating hosting and server management. They will work on projects that combine web development, AI automation, and digital marketing, helping create online platforms that are smart, scalable, and high converting. Working with innovative visitor-facing digital tools and emerging technologies to connect visitors to Discover Halifax content. This is a dynamic role that combines Web development with some hands-on IT support responsibilities for the organization.
Time allocation of duties:
- 60% of the time will be focused on the web maintenance, modification, and development activities.
- 20% supporting digital experience and emerging technology projects.
- 20% be responsible for providing end-user support, diagnosing and troubleshooting hardware, software, system and network issues with assistance from our managed IT support organization when needed. Providing recommendations on technical efficiencies for the team and implementing integrated business processes.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain and develop AI-friendly websites using modern frameworks (WordPress, Craft, or similar). Supporting the various websites, ensuring the readiness, quality, and accuracy of websites and online platforms.
- WordPress core maintenance and plugin updates. Updates/bug fixes to existing features/blocks/pages/templates. New page development as needed.
- Build and integrate AI chatbots and custom AI agents using OpenAI, LangChain, ChatGPT API, or similar tools.
- Develop AI workflows and automation systems for marketing and customer engagement.
- Manage website performance, SEO, analytics, and digital marketing integrations.
- Optimize conversion funnels and automate lead capture using AI-powered tools.
- Handle webmaster duties including hosting, updates, site optimization, and technical troubleshooting.
- Maintenance and upgrades to our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system which is currently IDSS.
- Supports the development and implementation of innovative visitor-facing digital tools that extend beyond traditional websites (mobile web apps, progressive web apps, in-market touchpoints, and digital guest services experience)
- Exploring emerging technologies, integrating content across multiple digital touchpoints (such as mobile apps, QR codes, kiosks, and digital signage).
- Collaborating with industry partners to deliver seamless, context-aware visitor information.
- Researches and supports booking and reservation technologies (and related APIs), overseeing app and micro-app initiatives.
- Develops adoption resources for staff and members and uses performance data and analytics to continuously improve visitor engagement and conversion outcomes.
- Support automated workflows, integrations, and business processes across organizational systems. Identifying opportunities to improve efficiency through automation enhancements and process improvements.
- Support with the diagnosing and troubleshooting to resolve hardware, software, or other network and system problems. Connecting with our IT support organization when needed.
Education and experience
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or equivalent
- A broad understanding of hardware, operating systems, websites, and various software applications gained from five (5) to seven (7) years of IT support and systems maintenance experience ideally at a small organization. At least 2 years of which will include web development.
- Experience using web platform development software – Wordpress, and with Microsoft Windows Server.
- Knowledge of digital ecosystem technologies including mobile web applications, progressive web apps (PWAs), APIs, QR code and NFC technologies, digital signage, kiosks, and customer self-service platforms.
- Project Management experience (scoping, budgeting, timeline management, vendor communications, and negotiation)
- Experience with monitoring and analysis of key performance indicators for website projects using analytics tools and analyze user behaviour and metrics.
- Experience managing databases, content management systems (CMS) or similar digital systems. Familiarity with API’s system integrations, or low-code/no-code automation platforms such as Zapier.
- Technology acumen, understanding best practices. Troubleshooting and anticipation of tech changes/issues. Some Accessibility/UX knowledge, would be ideal.
- Process automation coding skills (N8N) would be a definite asset, particularly within the AI space.
- Experience researching, evaluating, and implementing emerging digital technologies and visitor-facing solutions.
- Demonstrated capacity for critical thinking, proactive initiative, and sound commercial judgement.
- A dynamic, self-starting team player with a strong ability to deliver high-quality solutions collaboratively in a cost-effective, interdependent environment.
- Exceptional customer service and problem-solving skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Skilled in drafting procurement documents, vendor evaluations, and contract negotiations would be an asset.

Position details
The Web Developer and Tech support person will work a hybrid schedule from the office and home, 37.5 hours/week, Monday to Friday during business hours. There may be the occasional need to work evenings and/or weekends to meet deadlines and to travel for conferences.
